Are you ready to tackle the ABANA National Curriculum Level III grille? This two-night Zoom class will do a deep dive into the tooling and techniques required to forge the two welded collars onto the central stile of the Level III grille.
These collars and their associated tooling are a tricky bit of business, and this focused intensive led by Mark Aspery will get you there. The first session will cover tooling, starting out with how to forge anvil blocks, using one of the blocks to create a ½” bottom swage, then moving on to creating a positive blank in the shape of the collar, and then using that blank to make matched top and bottom swages that you’ll use to forge the collar.
The second session will cover techniques for forge-welding the collars using the swages including how to get the required dimensions. You will come out of this class with the ability to think through and forge complex top and bottom tools and be well on your way to forging one of the most challenging elements of the Level III grille.
This Zoom is scheduled for back-to-back evenings on Wednesday, April 30 and Thursday, May 1, 2025 from 8 – 10 p.m. ET (5 – 7 p.m. PT). Each night will run for approximately 2 hours with time allocated for discussion and questions.
Price: $40 for ABANA members (you must be signed in to get the discount)
$50 for non-members
Space is limited!
Sessions will be recorded so students can review the material when they get into their own forges. ABANA will hold these advanced intensives throughout 2025, focused on individual elements of the Level III grille. These sessions are most appropriate for the intermediate/advanced blacksmithing student.
